Charlotte, working in the marketing department of the Hortus Amsterdam, says: “You can view the Hortus Amsterdam as a plant museum, a museum with a living collection”. 

Remarkable, a different perspective on the Hortus. Charlotte continues, “The Hortus is located in the heart of Amsterdam, close to Waterlooplein. The Hortus has been here since 1638, and the city gradually grew around the garden. That makes it a unique patch of greenery.” 

Charlotte: “In the Hortus Amsterdam, there are about 10,000 plants from different climate zones. They are managed and exhibited to everyone. Not only can you view them, you can also learn about them. We offer education for both children and adults.” 

So, what kind of events can you do here? Charlotte: “In the evening, we often use the garden for events. Sometimes educational and organized by us. Sometimes business events or, for example, weddings.” 

Charlotte explains that she is currently standing in the Palm Greenhouse, where, as expected, the collection of palms and cicadas is located. Charlotte: “In the summer, most potted plants are strong enough to stand outside; they can handle the Dutch climate then. We move them all outside.” But why? Charlotte: “Because there is more space in the greenhouse, we can host more events there.”. 

We are also learning something special. We are standing close to the Eastern Cape bread tree. One of the oldest potted plants in the Western world. In the Netherlands for 300 years and in the collection of the Hortus Amsterdam since 1850.
